Atocongo Plant, Peru

During the year 2020 and because of the pandemic, the cement industry was strongly affected by the sharp decline in demand, forcing further restructuring.

At the same time, within the projects area of UNACEM Peru, led by CPO Jeffery Lewis, they realized that they could take advantage of this scenario as an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of “Lean Construction” and its application tools such as Last Planner System:

“We were participating in different specialization courses related to “Lean Construction” and the “Last Planner System” methodology, in order to improve our levels of project management and control. In that context we came across IPSUM’s ProPlanner.”

Much of the work performed by the company’s project management focuses on maintenance of pre-existing facilities and/or expansions of plant production capacity, including maintenance due to unforeseen events.

Maintenance associated with contingencies is highly critical and requires a rigorous planning control process since both plant production and operational safety could be strongly affected, thus challenging the teams to meet the objectives in record time. This was finally successfully achieved by the company in conjunction with the implementation of ProPlanner.

UNACEM is a Peruvian cement company with more than 100 years of history, born from the merger of Cementos Lima and Cementos Andinos.

Locally, it has 2 industrial plants: Condorcocha Plant (Tarma), the highest in the world, and Atocongo Plant (Lima), with an aggregate production capacity of more than 6 million tons of cement milling.

Over the last decade, the company has made a strong commitment to internationalization, starting operations in the United States in 2010 and later in Latin America (Ecuador, Chile and Colombia).
